Swakopmund
Give Swakopmund 2 nights as a coast stop on the Windhoek loop: one full day for dunes and the sea, one for the town, and skip it if you want desert only.
Swakopmund is Namibia's biggest coastal town and its adventure base, wedged between the Atlantic and the Namib Desert, 362 km from Windhoek on the paved B2. German colonial buildings, cold-water beaches, dune activities and seafood fill two nights. It is a standard stop on almost every self-drive loop, and it works all year because the desert climate barely swings.

Get around
There is no public transport in Swakopmund; the centre is small and walkable, so park the car and walk. Taxis are scarce in the centre, especially after 19:00 on Saturdays, but a ride within town is cheap and a trip to Walvis Bay should not run much over N$40. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Greet and ask 'how are you' before any question; avoid: Straight to business
- Village visits: Go with a guide and ask permission; avoid: Photographing without asking
- Roads: Wave at passing drivers on quiet gravel; stop for anyone in trouble; avoid: Speeding through villages
- Lodges: Follow staff instructions about walking at night; avoid: Leaving your room after dark in unfenced lodges without an escort
- Language: English or a few words of Afrikaans or Oshiwambo; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks German
Scams and watch-outs
- Coastal fog is frequent and can drop temperatures below 10°C in winter; bring a jacket even in summer.
- The Atlantic here is cold and the southern beach has no breakwater — swimming is not safe there.
- Driving the C34 north along the Skeleton Coast in fog is dangerous; do it in daylight only.
- Do not drive outside towns after dark: animals and unlit gravel roads.
- Since April 2025 most Western passports need a Namibian visa — apply online for e-visa pre-approval or pay N$1,600 on arrival.
Swakopmund is a relaxed resort town and generally safe by day; the real risks are fog, cold water, unlit roads after dark and petty theft around the craft market — keep valuables out of sight.
