Svoboda is a village of about 1,000 people 30 km northeast of Kursk, built around the Kursk Root Hermitage (Korennaya Pustyn), a monastery founded in 1597 on the spot where the Kursk Root Icon was found in 1295. The monastery, its springs and two small museums are the whole visit; most travellers come as a day trip from Kursk, and the last minibus back leaves early.

- Svoboda rail station is in Budanovka, 5 km from the village, with infrequent minibuses; do not rely on it.
- The descent from the monastery gates to the lower churches and springs is by steep stairs; wear shoes with grip.
- Weekends and religious holidays are crowded — arrive before noon.
- The Ponyri–Maloarkhangelsk road is partly dirt and poor after rain; approach from Kursk or the M2 instead.
The village itself is quiet and the monastery is a working religious site. The practical risks are the early last minibus, steep wet stairs to the springs, and cold water in the bathing pools — no lifeguards.
