Svendborg
Give Svendborg 2 nights as a base for the South Funen archipelago: one day in town, one day on a ferry to Ærø or a bike ride.
Svendborg is Funen's second city, a harbour town of about 27,000 on the Svendborgsund strait. It is the ferry gateway to the South Funen archipelago and the islands of Tåsinge, Langeland and Ærø. The town itself is small and walkable: a compact centre of old streets, two good museums and a working harbour. Most travellers come for the water, the boats and the island hopping, not for a checklist of sights. Two nights is the useful minimum; one night works if you only want the town and a short harbour cruise.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: station to harbour is about 10–15 minutes on foot. Bikes are the best way to reach the beaches and the bridge to Tåsinge; rentals sit on Frederiksø in the harbour (about 150 kr for the first day, then about 100 kr/day, June–August). Local buses cover the wider area; a car helps for Langeland and the villages.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake and eye contact; first names at once; avoid: Titles and small talk that goes on too long
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for meetings and dinners; avoid: Being 15 minutes late without a message
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or wine; say 'tak for mad' after the meal; avoid: Leaving right after eating
- Conversation: Dry humour, directness and self-deprecation; avoid: Boasting — Janteloven frowns on it
- Queues: Take a number (kølapper) where there is a machine; avoid: Pushing to the counter
- Cycling: Signal stops and turns with your hand; keep right; avoid: Riding side by side in busy lanes
- Toasts: 'Skål' with eye contact before and after drinking; avoid: Looking away mid-toast
Scams and watch-outs
- Ferry timetables to the small islands are thin: two sailings a day to some, and nothing in the evening. Check the day's last return before you go.
- Many harbour restaurants and tour boats run only in the summer season; outside June–August expect closures.
- Danish prices include service; tipping is rounding up only.
- Cyclists have priority on Danish roads and cycle lanes: look both ways before crossing.
Svendborg is a small, calm town and violent crime is rare. Real risks are water and weather: cold harbour water, slippery stones, and fast-changing wind on the sound. Summer crowds at the ferry terminal are the main hassle.
