Go as a half-day or one-night stop from Seoul: walk the Hwaseong fortress wall (2–3 h), sleep in Haenggung-dong if you stay. Skip if you only have 3 Seoul days.
Suwon is the Gyeonggi provincial capital and a Seoul suburb on Line 1, about an hour from Seoul Station. Its one unmissable sight is Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO-listed walled city from 1796 that you can walk end to end in an afternoon. Most travellers come for a half day or one night; the fortress, the temporary palace and the mural village sit within a 20-minute walk of each other.

Get around
Line 1 (blue) and the Suin-Bundang Line serve Suwon; Suwon Station is the hub. Local buses (green) cover the centre and the fortress; several lines run to Paldalmun roundabout. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. The centre is walkable: Suwon Station to Paldalmun Gate is about 30 min on foot, and the fortress, palace and mural village are all within 20 min of each other.

Scams and watch-outs
- Fortress and palace hours change by season (roughly 09:00–18:00 Mar–Oct, 10:00–17:00 Nov–Feb): check before you go.
- Hwaseong Haenggung is closed on some weekdays for events; the martial-arts demo does not run every day.
- Line 1 splits at Guro: make sure your train is the Cheonan/Sinchang branch, not the Incheon branch.
- Buses do not terminate at Suwon Station: check the direction before boarding.
- Summer monsoon (late Jun–Aug) can wash out a wall walk; the wall has little shelter.
Very safe by day and night; the real risks are traffic, summer monsoon rain on the wall, and unposted prices in a few old-town bars: ask the total before you sit.
