Sutherland
One night for SALT and the darkest skies in South Africa; a day-trip from Cape Town is too long (7 h round drive).
Sutherland sits at 1,450 m in the Karoo, the coldest town in South Africa and home to the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Its dry air and remote location produce some of the world's clearest night skies. Most visitors come for a single night: a daytime SALT tour, then an evening stargazing session. The town itself is small — a few B&Bs, a hotel, a handful of eateries — and there is little to do in daylight beyond the telescope and a short walk around the dorps.

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter nights drop below freezing: pack a warm jacket, hat and gloves for stargazing.
- SALT daytime tours run at set hours (check); night tours are limited to certain evenings — book ahead.
- The R354 from Matjiesfontein is tarred but has no petrol stations; fill up in Matjiesfontein or Cape Town.
- No ATM in Sutherland — bring enough cash for meals and accommodation.
Sutherland is a quiet, safe town. The main risks are the cold (winter nights below freezing) and the lack of services (no ATM, limited petrol). On the R354 watch for livestock on the road after dark.
