Surulere
Skip Surulere as a base: it is a mainland district of Lagos with one headline sight (the National Theatre) and stadiums. Give it half a day from a Lagos Island base, or stay one night if a concert or match is on.
Surulere is a dense residential and commercial district on the Lagos mainland, west of Yaba and north of the lagoon. It is known for the National Theatre, the National Stadium and Teslim Balogun Stadium, Fela Kuti's first shrine (Afro-Spot), and a strong street-food strip along Akerele and Ogunlana Drive. There is no beach and little for a first-time visitor to do for more than a day; most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to a Lagos Island stay, or as a cheaper bed if they are in town for a show or a match. Traffic between the island and the mainland is the main cost of staying here.
