Suo-Oshima

Go for 1–2 nights by car, or a summer beach day from Iwakuni or Hiroshima; without a car, skip — buses are too infrequent.
Suo-Oshima is a rural Seto Inland Sea island in Yamaguchi, joined to Honshu by the Oshima Bridge at Obatake. It sells itself as the Hawaii of Japan because many early emigrants to Hawaii left from here. Beaches, ridge-top viewpoints, mikan orchards and a small emigration museum are the draw. Getting around without a car is slow, so most visitors come by car for a summer day or one night.

Get around
A car is the practical way: sights sit on ridge roads and the coast, and buses run infrequently. Cabs exist but are expensive. The island is also a cycling destination, though the hills are real. The bridge connects at Obatake on the Sanyo Main Line.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Buses are infrequent: check the timetable before you rely on one.
- Some observation-deck access roads are poorly maintained; park low and walk up.
- Many restaurants close Mondays and Tuesdays, and dinner options are few.
- Typhoons can cancel ferries and close the bridge in September.
Rural and low-crime; the real risks are narrow winding roads, deer at dusk, summer heat and September typhoons that cancel ferries.
