Sunol
Skip as a base: Sunol is a half-day stop for the Niles Canyon Railway and a regional-wilderness trailhead. Sleep in Pleasanton, 15 min north.
Sunol is a village of about 900 people in a valley at the mouth of Niles Canyon, between Pleasanton and Fremont. There is one short Main Street, a heritage railroad, a dog statue and a large regional park. Almost nobody sleeps here; the useful move is a half day from Pleasanton or a hike from the Geary Road staging area.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons are hot and the trails are exposed: start early and carry more water than you think you need.
- Wildfire season can close park access and canyon roads with little notice: check the park district and Caltrans before you drive.
- Cell signal drops in Niles Canyon and on the wilderness trails.
- Main Street has few services and irregular opening hours: eat in Pleasanton if you are unsure.
Very low street crime. The real risks are heat on exposed trails, wildfire closures and the lack of phone signal in the canyon: tell someone your route and carry water.
