Sunderland

Sunderland is a former shipbuilding and glass-making city on the River Wear, 30 minutes by Metro from Newcastle and 55 minutes from Newcastle Airport. Its sights sit in two clusters: the city centre (museum, minster, Empire Theatre) and the coast at Roker and Seaburn. Most visitors use it as a half-day or day trip from Newcastle, or stop for a Premier League match at the Stadium of Light. It is cheaper than Newcastle and easy to reach without a car.

Get around
The Tyne & Wear Metro Green Line links the airport, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland station, Park Lane and the coast at Seaburn and Stadium of Light. Sunderland is in Fare Zone C: a one-zone single covers local hops, an all-zone ticket covers Newcastle and the airport. Local buses 700/702 loop the centre, university and seafront every 15 min.
