Give Summerland one full day and one night as a quiet stop between Kelowna and Penticton: beaches, a steam train and Bottleneck Drive wineries. Skip it if you want nightlife.

Summerland is a small Okanagan town of about 11,600 people on the west shore of Okanagan Lake, halfway between Kelowna (65 km north) and Penticton (18 km south) on Highway 97. It is a lake-and-orchard stop, not a city break: the walkable downtown takes under 15 minutes end to end, the sights sit in two clusters (lowertown on the lake and the upper town on the plateau), and the main draws are six beaches, the Kettle Valley Steam Railway and the Bottleneck Drive winery route. One night covers it; two nights if you want a slow beach day.

Get around

Highway 97 is the only highway in and out. The downtown core is walkable in under 15 minutes, but the residential town spreads over steep hills, so a car is the practical way to reach beaches, wineries and trailheads. BC Transit runs route 30 to Penticton (about 25 min, $3) and route 70 to Kelowna with stops in Summerland, Peachland and West Kelowna, Monday to Friday; both are daytime services only. Taxis are limited: Summerland Taxi, +1-250-494-6651.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Wildfire is the real risk: in August 2026 an out-of-control fire reached Summerland and a mandatory evacuation was ordered. Check EmergencyInfoBC and the B.C. Wildfire Service before booking or driving in.
  • Smoke can cancel the point of the trip (beaches, views, patios) for days at a time in July and August.
  • Winery and cidery tasting-room hours change with the season; confirm before you drive out.
  • The nearest hospital is in Penticton, about 20 minutes south.
  • Steep hills and unlit shoulders on Highway 97 make walking between clusters unpleasant; drive or take the bus.

Summerland is a small, low-crime town and normal precautions cover it. The genuine hazards are wildfire and smoke in July and August, hot dry trails on Giant's Head, and cold, deep water at the lake beaches: check evacuation orders before you travel and swim near other people.
