Sumatra is the sixth-largest island in the world and the reason most people come is wildlife and volcanoes, not beaches: orangutans at Bukit Lawang, the crater lake at Toba, Kerinci's 3,805 m cone, and surf in the Mentawai and Nias. Distances are the trap — Medan to Padang is a long road day (check current times), and Banda Aceh to Bandar Lampung is far longer. Fly between hubs, sleep three nights in one place, and treat the Trans-Sumatran Highway as a transfer, not a sightseeing route.

- Equatorial: rain in any month, heaviest Nov–Apr on the west-facing coast. Toba sits at 900 m and is cooler than Medan.

Sumatra sits on the equator: hot and humid all year, with two wetter periods rather than a true dry season. Rain usually comes as afternoon downpours.
