Sugarcreek
Sugarcreek, Ohio
Give Sugarcreek half a day plus one night: museum, cheese shops and a trolley ride, then drive on. Two nights only if you want the Amish back roads.
Sugarcreek is a small Ohio village in Tuscarawas County, about 18 miles east of Millersburg on State Route 39, in the hills first settled by the Amish in Ohio. It calls itself the centre of Ohio's Swiss cheese industry, with several cheese factories nearby, and the sights are a museum, a few shops and a horse-drawn trolley. Most travellers see it in an afternoon and sleep one night, using it as a base for the Amish Country loop.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: SR 39 runs through the village and I-77 is the main link from the north and south. The centre itself is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, and the Swiss Valley Trolley covers the village and Amish countryside on a horse-drawn loop. There is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Many Amish-run shops and stands close on Sundays and do not follow daylight saving time, so opening hours can shift by an hour in summer.
- Bars are few; for a proper bar evening most people drive to New Philadelphia or Dover.
- Country roads have slow-moving buggies and bicycles: pass only when you can see clear road.
- Some businesses are cash-first; carry small bills even if cards are accepted in the bigger shops.
Sugarcreek is a small, low-crime village and feels safe on foot in daylight. The real risks are country-road driving around buggies and bicycles, winter ice on SR 39, and assuming shops are open on Sundays or during Amish daylight-saving shifts.
