Sudbury is Northern Ontario's largest city, built on a 1.8-billion-year-old meteorite crater that turned out to hold nickel and copper. It is a service hub on the Trans-Canada Highway, so most travellers pass through on the way to Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay or Timmins. Two nights covers the science centres, the Big Nickel and the lakefront; a third day adds the Lake Laurentian trails or a drive to High Falls.

Get around
GOVA buses run from a downtown terminal, roughly every 30 min at peak and hourly late at night and on Sundays; outlying areas are served less often. A single ride is about $4.00 (2025) end to end, with multi-ride and 31-day passes. A car is the practical choice for Dynamic Earth, the A.Y. Jackson lookout and the conservation areas.

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is long and genuinely cold: December to March lows sit near −12 to −18 °C, with heavy snow.
- Distances inside the city are large — Greater Sudbury is Ontario's biggest city by area, so a 60 km bus ride across town is normal.
- Some rural roads are in poor shape; check conditions before driving north on Highway 144.
- Blackflies and mosquitoes are active near the lakes from late May into July.
Sudbury is a normal mid-size Canadian city: violent crime against visitors is rare, but keep to lit streets downtown at night and lock your car. The bigger risks are winter driving, black ice and long distances between services.
