Stay 2–3 nights: the whitewashed centre is walkable in a day, then add a Tarabuco market Sunday or a dinosaur-footprint morning.
Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital and its calmest big stop: a UNESCO-listed colonial centre at 2,800 m, far lower and gentler than La Paz. Most travellers use it to rest, study Spanish or reset between Potosí and the salt flats. Two nights covers the centre; three lets you add Tarabuco or the dinosaur tracks.

The centre is walkable: most sights sit within five blocks of Plaza 25 de Mayo. Taxis charge about Bs 5 per person inside the centre; micros cost Bs 3 (2026) and have no fixed stops, so flag them down. The Dinobus to Cal Orck'o leaves from in front of the cathedral.

Scams and watch-outs
- Road blockades are common around Sucre and to Potosí: ask at the terminal whether the road is open before buying a ticket.
- Altitude is about 2,800 m — lower than La Paz, but arrive rested if you came straight from the altiplano.
- Bus-terminal touts outside the gate have double-sold seats; buy at the operator's office inside.
- Most buses have no toilet; overnight rides stop once for a roadside break.
- Some churches and museums close at midday and on Mondays: check before walking up.
Sucre is one of Bolivia's calmer cities and the centre is fine on foot by day. Take taxis after dark, keep an eye on bags in markets, and treat protests and blockades as a transport problem rather than a personal one.
