Subotica is Serbia's northern border town, 10 km from Hungary, and it holds the country's best run of Hungarian Art Nouveau: a 1912 city hall, Europe's second-largest synagogue, and a palace by Ferenc Raichle. The centre is compact and walkable, the lake town of Palić is 8 km out, and the international rail link to Budapest is suspended, so most travellers arrive by bus or via Szeged.

Get around
The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses cost RSD 95 a ride (2026 estimate); on single-door buses you pay the driver at the front, on double-door buses you buy at the back. Bus 6 runs to Palić from near Hotel Patria. Taxis wait by the city hall and the station: check the meter is running.

Scams and watch-outs
- The direct international train from Budapest is cancelled until at least late 2026; the workaround is a mainline train to Szeged, then a regional train about 45 min to Subotica.
- City hall tours run for individual visitors on Tue–Fri at 12:00 only; groups by appointment.
- The synagogue is visitable by appointment or, roughly March–October, on Saturdays 10:00–14:00 — outside those windows it is closed.
- The People's Theatre on the main square has been under major reconstruction; check before planning an evening there.
- Smoking is still common in cafés and bars despite partial bans.
Subotica is a calm, low-crime town; the real issues are the summer heat, unlit side streets after midnight, and taxis without a running meter — ask the fare or insist on the meter.
