Styria is Austria's green south-east: Graz for two nights of food, design and old-town walking, then either the Dachstein–Schladming mountains for a ski or hiking block, or the wine hills and spa towns of the south-east for a slow day-trip loop. Rail links Graz to Vienna in about 2 h 40 and to Salzburg in about 4 h, so it slots into a Vienna–Salzburg route without a car. A car only pays off for the wine roads and the small mountain valleys.

Graz–Klagenfurt has no direct rail line until the Koralmbahn opens; the bus over the Pack pass is the usual link and can be slow in winter.
