Streaky Bay
Two nights if you want Murphy's Haystacks and a swim off the jetty; one night is enough as a stop on the Eyre Peninsula drive.
Streaky Bay is a small fishing and farming town on the west side of the Eyre Peninsula, about 110 km southeast of Ceduna and roughly 290 km west of Port Lincoln on the Flinders Highway (B100). There is no commercial airport and no public transport, so it works as a road-trip stop with a jetty, a pub and one good rock-formation detour.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport: without a car you are stuck in town.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; Telstra works best, other networks are weaker (check your provider).
- Long drives between towns on the Eyre Peninsula with few services: carry water and fuel.
- Beach and jetty swimming is fine in the enclosure; outside it, treat the open coast with care.
Very safe. The real risks are the drive (long distances, wildlife at dawn and dusk, unsealed roads) and summer heat and flies; there is a hospital in town for emergencies.
