Stratford is a dairy town of about 2,600 people on the Avon River, 10 minutes off the Princes Highway past Sale. It has a river walk, a handful of cafés, a pub and a two-week Shakespeare festival in April–May. Almost everyone sees it as a stop between Melbourne and the Gippsland Lakes, not a base.

Get around
Walk. The town is flat and small, and the shops, cafés and river parks cluster around Tyers Street. There is no local bus and no car rental in Stratford; hire a car in Sale. The walk to Knob Reserve is about 35 minutes and Old Redbank Road is steep.
