Strangford is a small village on the narrow mouth of Strangford Lough, where the tide runs hard between the village and Portaferry. The draw is Castle Ward, the National Trust mansion and Game of Thrones filming location, plus two small tower houses and a Neolithic court tomb, all within a short walk. It works as one night or a half-day stop on a County Down loop, not as a multi-day base.

The village, both castles and the court cairn are reachable on foot in an afternoon. National Cycleway 99 runs on-road from Newtownards through Strangford to Downpatrick and Newcastle. Downpatrick taxis serve the area; there is no local bus around the peninsula.
