Stony Plain
Skip as a base: half a day for the murals and the pioneer museum, then sleep in Edmonton or Spruce Grove.
Stony Plain is a town of about 17,000 people 23 km west of Edmonton, next to Spruce Grove. It is known as the Town with the Painted Past for its outdoor murals, and it holds a pioneer museum with 24 buildings. There is no rail link and no airport: you arrive by car on Highway 16, or by on-demand bus from Spruce Grove. Most travellers see it as a half-day stop on the way to or from Edmonton, not a place to base a trip.

Get around
The town is small and flat: walk the mural core in 20–30 minutes. A car is the practical way to reach the museum and anything outside the centre. Stony Plain Transit runs an on-demand bus from Spruce Grove; Edmonton riders take Spruce Grove Transit route 560 and transfer, paying a separate fare.
