Stockholm in October: what to expect

October is Stockholm's transition month: the birch and maple colour peaks in the first half, then the leaves come down and the light goes flat. Days start around 11 hours and end near 9, and the sun sits low even at midday, so photographs need a fast lens rather than a filter.

Expect roughly 10 °C by day and 4 °C at night at the start of the month, drifting to about 7 °C and 2 °C by the end. Rain falls on somewhere between 10 and 14 days, usually as light drizzle or a grey overcast that clears by afternoon rather than a soaking. Wind off the water makes the Gamla Stan and Djurgården waterfronts feel colder than the thermometer suggests.

First frost in the city is possible late in the month but not reliable; snow in Stockholm in October is rare. Daylight saving ends on the last Sunday of October, so clocks go back one hour and evenings get dark noticeably earlier.

October is one of the quietest months in Stockholm. The summer archipelago traffic and the cruise-ship day-trippers are gone, and the Christmas market crowds have not arrived. You can walk into most museums without a queue and often get a table at short notice.

Hotel rates sit near their yearly low, well below June to August and below December. Flights from the US and UK are cheaper outside half-term weeks. Some archipelago boat services and island cafés cut back or stop for the season, so check timetables before planning a day out to the islands.

The trade-off is that a few seasonal places close and some attractions move to shorter opening hours. The big museums, the royal palaces in the city and the main sightseeing boats keep running.

The month's fixed point is All Saints' Day, which falls on Saturday 31 October in 2026. It is a quiet public holiday rather than a festival: Stockholmers light candles on family graves at dusk, and the big cemeteries such as Skogskyrkogården are worth a walk for the atmosphere. Shops run shorter hours.

Beyond that, October is a normal working month in Stockholm. Expect the usual round of concerts, theatre and exhibitions rather than a street festival. Check the city's official listings and the venues themselves for dates, since programmes change each year.

Plan October around interiors. Djurgården holds the densest cluster: the Vasa Museum, Skansen and the Nordic Museum are all within a short walk of each other, so you can switch between them as the weather turns. Gamla Stan's narrow streets and the Royal Palace work in drizzle, and the covered market hall Östermalms Saluhall is a good lunch stop on a wet day.

For autumn colour, walk the Djurgården paths, the Norra Djurgården woods or the island of Långholmen in the first half of the month. The archipelago is still reachable, but services thin out and some island facilities close, so treat a boat trip as a half-day with a fixed return rather than a full day of wandering.

Layers beat one heavy coat. A waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, a hat and thin gloves cover almost every October day in Stockholm. Bring shoes with grip for wet cobbles, and a small umbrella for the drizzle that comes and goes.

Evenings are dark and cool, so a scarf and a slightly warmer layer for dinner are useful. If you plan a boat trip or a walk along the water, add a windproof outer layer.

September is warmer, brighter and still busy-ish, with autumn colour starting in the north. November is darker and wetter than October, with Christmas markets opening late in the month. December brings Lucia, julbord buffets and Christmas markets, but also the shortest days of the year.

If your dates are flexible and you want the city at its best, aim for late May to early September. If you want low prices and no queues, October is a reasonable compromise — just plan for indoor days.
