Stockholm in May: what to expect

May is Stockholm's transition month: the ice is gone, the trees leaf out in the first fortnight, and the light changes fastest of any month. Expect a daytime high near 15 °C and a night low near 6 °C, but the spread matters more than the average — a sunny 20 °C afternoon and a 4 °C night can fall in the same week, and early May is closer to 11 °C than 15 °C.

Rain arrives as short showers rather than all-day drizzle, with roughly 8–10 days recording some precipitation. Wind off the Baltic and Lake Mälaren makes the water and open squares feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Daylight grows from about 16 hours on 1 May to 17.5 hours on 31 May, so late-evening walks and outdoor dinners are realistic from the middle of the month.

May sits in the sweet spot before the summer peak. Weekday museums, the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan lanes are comfortable; weekends and the last week of the month get busier as Swedes take long weekends and the first tour groups arrive. The 1 May public holiday and the days around it are the single busiest stretch.

Hotel rates are still below June–August levels for most of the month, then climb from roughly the third week. Booking two to three weeks ahead usually beats walk-up rates. Flights from the US and UK are cheaper in the first half of May than around the 1 May holiday or the last weekend.

The month opens with Walpurgis Night on 30 April and May Day on 1 May. Bonfires and student celebrations mark the night before, and 1 May is a public holiday with parades and some closures. If you want a quiet city, avoid these two days.

The bigger practical change comes at the end of the month, when archipelago boats switch to summer timetables and services to islands such as Vaxholm, Grinda and Sandhamn increase. Check the operator's timetable before planning a day trip, since shoulder-season sailings are thinner in early May.

Use the long daylight for the outdoor half of the city. Djurgården's park and museum cluster (Vasa Museum, Skansen, ABBA Museum) works in any weather, and Skansen's open-air houses and Nordic animals are at their best once the trees are out. Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace are walkable in a morning; the changing of the guard resumes outdoor routines in the warmer months.

For water, take a ferry or a short boat trip into the archipelago — Vaxholm is the easiest half-day, Grinda and Sandhamn need a full day and a timetable check. In the city, Monteliusvägen on Södermalm and the City Hall tower give the classic views, and the 17-hour days mean you can shoot them at 20:00 in good light.

If the weather turns, the museums carry the day: Fotografiska, the Moderna Museet and the Vasa Museum are all indoor and all central.

Pack for two seasons in one week. Layers beat a single heavy coat: a T-shirt for a 18 °C afternoon, a light down or wool mid-layer, and a windproof and water-resistant outer shell for showers and the waterfront. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than waterproof boots — Stockholm is flat and paved, but you will cover a lot of ground.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen: the high-latitude sun is strong on clear days even when the air is cool. A compact umbrella or hooded shell handles the showers. If you plan an archipelago day, bring a warm layer for the boat and a refillable water bottle.

April is colder and greyer, with thaw and mud, but it is the quietest month for museums and hotel prices. June brings near-endless light and Midsummer, along with the year's highest crowds and prices — book Midsummer week early or stay in the city. July is warmer but many locals leave, some city restaurants close, and hotel rates can dip even as the archipelago fills.

If your dates are flexible, the first half of May gives you most of June's daylight at April's prices.
