The honest verdict

Stockholm's sights sit on a handful of islands that are close on the map and separated by water, so the trips that go wrong are the ones that pack Gamla Stan, Djurgården and Södermalm into one day, arrive at a museum on a closed Monday, or bring only cash to a city where many places take cards only. Daylight matters: six hours in December, nearly all night in June. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; the archipelago and Uppsala are trips away from one kept bed.

Money and SIM

Budget day: SEK 600–1,000 excl. bed
Paying: Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere; many places do not take cash at all. Carry a card with a contactless chip and a backup card.
Cash: Cash is rarely needed. If you want some, use a bank ATM (Bankomat) and decline the machine's currency conversion; carry a card and a phone payment app.
SIM: Install an eSIM before you fly; EU roaming applies to EU SIMs.
