Västerort, Solna and Sundbyberg, Stockholm: neighborhood guide

Västerort is the western half of Stockholm municipality, a spread of garden suburbs, 20th-century housing estates and a high-tech business cluster that wraps around two independent towns, Solna and Sundbyberg. It is not one neighbourhood but several, and the differences matter when you pick a bed.

Bromma and Spånga are green, low-rise and affluent, with villas, gardens and the old Bromma airport. Vällingby was built in 1954 as one of the world's first planned multi-purpose suburbs and still works as a small city centre with its own square and metro stop. Blackeberg is a modernist suburb on the lake shore, known for the vampire film Let the Right One In. Kista, further north, is a business and telecom cluster that rivals central Stockholm for offices.

Solna is a separate municipality holding Hagaparken, a royal park with three palaces, and the Karolinska Institute, which selects the Nobel Prize in medicine. Sundbyberg, nicknamed Sumpan, is Sweden's smallest municipality by land area, grown along the railway with rectangular blocks and a compact main street.

The Järvafältet estates — Rinkeby, Tensta, Hjulsta — were built in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the Million Programme and have a reputation for social problems. They are residential, not tourist areas; there is no reason to book there, and no reason to avoid passing through on the metro.

For a first visit to Stockholm, no. The sights you came for — Gamla stan, the Vasa Museum, Djurgården, the waterfront — are in the inner city or on its islands, and Västerort adds 15–30 minutes each way on every trip. You will spend your holiday on the Tunnelbana.

The case for staying is price and a specific reason. Hotel and apartment rates in Solna and Sundbyberg are usually lower than Södermalm or Norrmalm for the same standard, and both have fast rail links. If you are visiting Karolinska hospital, flying from Bromma, attending an event at Friends Arena in Solna, or staying a week and want a kitchen and a quieter street, it works well.

Sundbyberg is the better base of the two for a visitor: commuter trains and the Tvärbanan light rail meet there, the centre has cafés and shops, and the ride over lake Mälaren on the Tvärbanan is a genuine sight in itself. Solna suits anyone whose trip revolves around Hagaparken or the stadium. Bromma is fine if you have an early flight from BMA. Skip Rinkeby, Tensta and Hjulsta for accommodation.

If you are unsure, book two nights in the inner city first and move out only if you want the lower rate.

This is a residential area, so food is everyday rather than destination. Sundbyberg's main street has the densest cluster: cafés, bakeries, pizza and kebab places, a few restaurants, and bars that fill up after work. Solna centrum and the streets around it cover the same ground, plus lunch places serving the hospital and office crowd.

Vällingby centrum and Kista have shopping-centre food courts and chain restaurants, useful on a Sunday or a rainy evening when you do not want to travel. Expect Swedish lunch pricing — a daily special (dagens lunch) is the cheapest proper meal of the day, usually with salad, bread and coffee included, and it is served on weekdays around 11:00–14:00.

For anything you would call a meal out, most visitors ride into the inner city. The exception is Hagaparken: bring a picnic in summer, since the park has lawns, water and no food of its own beyond the café at the butterfly house.

Public transport covers the whole area and is the way to do it. The Tunnelbana green line runs west through Bromma and Vällingby; the blue line serves Solna, Sundbyberg, Kista and the Järvafältet estates. Commuter rail (pendeltåg) stops at Sundbyberg and Solna and reaches Stockholm Central in about 10 minutes. The Tvärbanan light rail links Solna and Alvik and continues south, crossing lake Mälaren on a scenic stretch.

Buy SL tickets in the app or with a contactless card; a single fare covers 75 minutes of travel including changes, and travel cards cover 7 or 30 days. Fares and zone rules change, so check before you buy. From Arlanda, take the Arlanda Express or commuter rail to the centre and change; from Bromma (BMA), the airport is inside the area and a bus or taxi reaches Solna and Sundbyberg in minutes.

By car, the E4 and E18 cross the region and rush hour is heavy, especially around stadium events. The suburbs are exempt from the congestion tax, but there are toll stations on Tranebergsbron and on the roads between Solna and the inner city, so a car is rarely worth it here. Walking is pleasant inside Bromma, Sundbyberg and Hagaparken, less so between them.
