Stillwater
Stillwater, Oklahoma
Two nights is enough: one for OSU campus and downtown, one for a lake or a game. Skip it on a non-game weekend if you want big-city sights.
Stillwater is a college town of about 46,000 people in Frontier Country, built around Oklahoma State University. Its rhythm follows the academic calendar: game weekends fill every hotel and bar, while summer empties the campus and drops room rates. Come for a campus-and-downtown day, a lake afternoon, or a Cowboys football or wrestling weekend, not for a long city break.

Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Game weekends: hotels sell out and prices jump — book weeks ahead.
- Summer heat: July and August afternoons often top 35 °C; do lake and trail time early.
- Bars on The Strip close at 2 AM; arrange a ride before then.
- Tornado season runs spring: check local weather alerts and know your shelter.
- Distances between lakes, campus and downtown are too long to walk; plan a car or bus.
Stillwater is a low-crime college town; the real issues are drink-driving on game nights, 2 AM bar crowds on The Strip, summer heat and spring tornado warnings. Keep to lit streets near campus and downtown after midnight.
