Steyning
Half a day is enough to walk the Saxon church, the high street and Bramber Castle; use it as a lunch stop between Brighton and the South Downs, not a base.
Steyning is a compact Saxon market town at the foot of the South Downs, 4 miles north of Shoreham-by-Sea. Its appeal is a single afternoon: the Church of St Andrew and St Cuthman, the timber-framed St Mary's House, the Norman ruin at Bramber and a high street of independent shops. Most visitors pass through on the A283 rather than stay overnight.
