Stendal
Give Stendal one night, or a half-day stop between Berlin and Hanover: the brick old town is a 2–3 hour walk, not a base.
Stendal is a 38,000-person town in the Altmark, the north of Saxony-Anhalt, roughly halfway between Berlin and Hanover. Its draw is a compact, well-preserved medieval old town built in brick: two Gothic town gates, a cathedral and a double-towered church, plus a town hall with a 5.4 m Roland statue. Trains call here, so it works as a stop rather than a destination.

Get around
The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Regional trains link Stendal with Magdeburg, Wittenberge and Uelzen; intercity trains toward Hanover and Berlin call roughly every two hours. Local buses cover the outskirts; a car helps for the Bismarck estate at Döbbelin.
