Stellenbosch is the working heart of the Cape Winelands, 50 km east of Cape Town and the second-oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1679. Oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch gables and a large university give the centre a lived-in feel rather than a museum one. Most visitors come for one or two nights of estate tastings, then move on to Franschhoek or back to the city.

Get around
The centre is small enough to cover entirely on foot; street names are painted in yellow on the kerb edges rather than posted on signs. For outlying estates you need a car, a booked wine tour or the Vine Hopper minibus, which loops around about 12 estates and lets you hop off and on. Rideshare (Uber) covers town and nearby estates; agree the fare before you get in a metered taxi.
