Ste. Rose du Lac
Give Ste. Rose du Lac one night, or two if you fish or ski: it is a small town on the way to Dauphin, not a destination on its own.
Ste. Rose du Lac is a town of about 1,000 people in Manitoba's Prairie Mountain region, sitting between Lake Dauphin and Lake Manitoba at the junction of PTH 5 and PTH 68. It is 50 km east of Dauphin and about 300 km northwest of Winnipeg. The town is small and its sights are few, so most travellers use it as a quiet overnight stop, a base for lake fishing and beaches, or a break on the drive between Winnipeg and Dauphin. One night covers the town; two nights suit anyone here for the water, the trails or the October festival.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between services are long: fill the tank in Dauphin or Neepawa before you arrive.
- Winter driving on PTH 5 and PTH 68 can be icy and snow-covered; check road conditions before setting out.
- Cell coverage is good in town but patchy on the back roads and around the lakes.
- Many businesses keep short or seasonal hours: check ahead in winter.
A quiet, low-crime rural town; the real risks are winter driving, long distances between services and wildlife on the roads at dusk.
