Statesville
Skip Statesville unless you need a cheap bed between Charlotte and the mountains, or you're a French and Indian War buff: half a day at Fort Dobbs, then move on.
Statesville is a small town at the I-40/I-77 junction, 45 min north of Charlotte. Its only real draw is Fort Dobbs State Historic Site, a reconstructed 1750s fort. Most travellers use it as an overnight stop or skip it entirely. The town itself has a compact downtown but no must-see sights.
