Starke
Starke, Florida
Skip as a base: Starke is a brief stop between Gainesville and Jacksonville. Sleep here only if you need a cheap bed off US-301.
Starke is a small Bradford County town of about 5,500 people on US-301, halfway between Gainesville and Jacksonville. Its draw is a compact historic downtown — a 1902 Romanesque courthouse, a 1940 post office mural, a 1922 women's club — plus Camp Blanding and the state prison nearby. Most travellers pass through in an hour or use it as a budget bed on the drive between the two cities.

Get around
A car is effectively required: sights are spread along US-301 and FL-16, and there is no useful local bus. Downtown is a small grid you can walk in 10 minutes. The US-301 expressway bypasses town to the west; take the old route (Temple Ave) to reach the centre.

- US-301 / Temple Ave strip
- Chain motels on the north edge of town; free parking, easiest for a one-night drive stop.
- Downtown Starke
- Grid streets around Call St and Thompson St; walkable to the courthouse, mural and cafés, but almost no lodging.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and afternoon thunderstorms from June to September; plan indoor stops midday.
- Winter cold fronts can push overnight temperatures near freezing a few times a year.
- Downtown businesses keep short hours and some close early; check before driving in.
- The US-301 bypass skips the centre — follow signs for Temple Ave if you want downtown.
Starke is a small town and daytime downtown is calm; the main practical risks are summer heat, storms and driving US-301 at night. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at motel lots.
