Stara Zagora
Spend 1–2 days in Stara Zagora: see the Regional Museum of History and Neolithic Dwellings, then relax by the lake; add a half‑day trip to Plovdiv if time permits.
Stara Zagora sits near the centre of Bulgaria, a rail and road hub with a rich 8,000‑year history. Its museums, Roman ruins and lakeside promenade fit comfortably into a short stay, while good bus links make a quick day‑trip to Plovdiv easy.

Language
Bulgarian is a South Slavic language and the language in which Cyrillic was first standardised. In Sofia, Plovdiv and on the coast many younger people speak English; older people may know Russian or German. Signs in Latin letters are common in the centres, but bus timetables and village menus are often Cyrillic only.
- Hello: здравейте (zdraveyte); thank you: благодаря (blagodarya); please: моля (molya).
- The head movement is reversed for many Bulgarians: a nod means no, a side-to-side shake means yes. Say da (yes) or ne (no) to be sure.
- Learning the 30-letter alphabet takes an afternoon and pays off at bus stations.
