Stanhope

Go for one night as a Weardale base: 2 nights if you walk or ride the heritage railway, 1 if you are passing to Alston or Barnard Castle.

Stanhope is a small market town of under 1,600 people on the River Wear, ringed by North Pennine moors. It works as a quiet one- or two-night base for walking, the Weardale Railway and the lead-mining museums up the valley, not as a stand-alone sightseeing destination. A car or the hourly Weardale Bus 101 from Bishop Auckland is how you arrive.

Get around

The village is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes. Everything else in Weardale needs wheels: the A689 runs west up the valley, the B6278 crosses the moors south to Barnard Castle. Weardale Bus 101 runs hourly from Bishop Auckland and stops several times through the village; only a few buses a day continue west to Ireshopeburn and Killhope. Peter's Private Hire is the local taxi firm.

  • Killhope Lead Mining Museum has been closed for refurbishment; check before you drive up the valley.
  • Stanhope Swimming Pool is an outdoor heated pool and has been closed in recent seasons; check.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G with variable signal on the side roads; 5G has not reached the area.

A quiet, low-crime town. The real risks are moor weather, ice on the A689 in winter, fast traffic on the A689 through the village and patchy mobile signal on the side roads.
