Stamford

Give Stamford one full day and one night: walk the Georgian centre and Burghley House on foot, then leave — two nights only if you want the lanes by car.

Stamford is a small Lincolnshire market town, about 21,000 people, halfway between London and York on the old Great North Road. Its draw is a compact, protected Georgian centre of roughly 600 listed buildings, plus Burghley House a mile south. The station sits on the Peterborough–Birmingham line, so it works as a stop between London and the Midlands or the north rather than a base. Most of the centre is walkable in an afternoon; the surrounding villages and lanes need a car or a bus.

Get around

Walk. The centre is compact and the shopping streets are pedestrianised; Burghley House is just over a mile on foot via the B1081 park gateway. Taxis wait along Broad Street. For the villages and lanes, a car or the Delaine bus 201/202 toward Peterborough and Bourne works better than the train.

  • Browne's Hospital is a working almshouse, not a visitor attraction: public access is rare.
  • Some churches keep limited hours; a locked door is normal, not a snub.
