St. Mary
Stay 1 night in St. Mary only as a park gateway: it is a supply stop at the Going-to-the-Sun Road east entrance, not a destination.
St. Mary is a tiny town (population about 54) on US-89 where the Going-to-the-Sun Road meets the east side of Glacier National Park. It exists for park visitors: fuel, groceries, a couple of gift shops and a lodge. Treat it as a bed and supply base for the east side, not a place to spend days.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Going-to-the-Sun Road over Logan Pass is seasonal: check the park's opening dates before you plan a crossing.
- Cell service is patchy around town and inside the park; download offline maps.
- Wildlife on the roads at dawn and dusk: drive slowly and never approach animals.
- Summer lodging books out far ahead; walk-in beds in July and August are unlikely.
Very low crime; the real risks are wildlife, mountain weather that turns fast, and long drives with no phone signal. Carry water, layers and bear spray if you hike.
