St. Lawrence
Go for one night as a Burin Peninsula stop: museum, the Chambers Cove walk and fluorspar jewellery. Two nights only if you want the cove and the coast slowly.
St. Lawrence is a town of about 1,100 on the Burin Peninsula in southern Newfoundland, 345 km and roughly 4 h 45 min by road from St. John's. It is known for its soccer teams, its fluorspar mine, and the 1942 wrecks of the USS Truxtun and USS Pollux, when locals rescued survivors at Chambers Cove. Sights are few and close together: one full day covers the museum, the memorial and the nature walk. It works as an overnight stop on a southern Newfoundland loop, not as a base for a week.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel up in Marystown or Clarenville: stations on the peninsula are few and hours are short.
- The nature walk is rough gravel and open coast: wear boots, and turn back in fog or high wind.
- Cell coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you leave the highway.
- Many kitchens and the museum close outside late June to early September: check hours before you commit to a night.
Very safe. The real risks are the drive (moose at dusk, 345 km (214 mi) of highway), coastal weather on the nature walk, and services that close without notice outside summer.Very safe.
