St. Joseph is a Missouri River bluff town 45 minutes north of Kansas City, known as the start of the Pony Express and the place where Jesse James was shot. The historic core is compact and walkable, but the museums, the psychiatric museum and the art museum are spread along Frederick Avenue, so a car saves an hour of the day. Two nights is the ceiling unless you are using it as a base for northwest Missouri.
