St Helens
Stay 2 nights if you ride the mountain bike trails or want a Bay of Fires day; 1 night is enough if you are only passing up the east coast.
St Helens is the largest town on Tasmania's north-east coast and the practical base for the Bay of Fires, Binalong Bay and the Blue Tier mountain bike trails. It is a fishing and beach town of about 2,000 people, two hours by car from Launceston, with a compact centre, a working harbour and no shops north of town. Most travellers use it as a two-night stop on an east-coast drive rather than a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- There are no shops, fuel or drinking water north of St Helens toward the Bay of Fires: fill up and carry water.
- Kangaroos, wallabies and wombats on the highway at dawn and dusk; drive slower than you think you need to.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the Blue Tier and along the coast north of Binalong Bay.
- Bushfire risk in summer: check the Tasmania Fire Service warnings before any walk or drive.
- Swimming is cold year-round and some beaches have rips and no lifeguards.
St Helens is a small, low-crime town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the drive (wildlife at dawn and dusk, long empty stretches), cold water and rips at unpatrolled beaches, and summer bushfire: check warnings before you head out.
