St Helens is an industrial town in Merseyside, 14 miles northeast of Liverpool, built on coal and plate glass. The World of Glass museum, the rugby league stadium and a handful of parks fill a half day. Most travellers sleep in Liverpool and ride out, or use the town as a cheap motorway stop.

The centre is walkable: St Helens Central is about 100 yards from the bus station, and the World of Glass is nearby.
