St. George, Utah
Base here 2–3 nights for Zion and Snow Canyon, not as a Zion substitute: it is 45–60 min from the park gate and 1.5 h from Las Vegas.
St. George is a desert city of about 80,000 in Utah's southwest corner, on I-15 between Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. It works as a lower-cost base for Zion National Park, Snow Canyon and the Red Cliffs reserve, with 300-plus sunny days a year, warm winters and a historic Mormon downtown. Most travellers give it 2–3 nights, or one night as a driving stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons hit 38–40 °C: hike before 10:00 or after 17:00 and carry 3 L of water per person.
- Flash floods in slot canyons and the Red Cliffs reserve after monsoon storms, Jul–Sep.
- Zion Canyon shuttle and park entry rules change by season: check the NPS site before you drive out.
- Distances look short on the map but trailheads are on dirt roads: check your rental car's clearance.
Low violent-crime risk; the real hazards are desert heat, flash floods and long drives on empty roads. Carry water, tell someone your trail plan and keep a full tank between towns.
