St Asaph
Llanelwy
One night, or a half-day stop off the A55: the cathedral and a riverside walk, then move on to Rhyl, Denbigh or Llangollen.
St Asaph is one of Britain's smallest cities, with a population of about 3,500, and its 13th-century cathedral is the main reason to stop. There is no rail station: you arrive by bus from Rhyl or by car on the A55. Most visitors see it in two to three hours and sleep in Rhyl, Denbigh or Llandudno instead.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk: cathedral, High Street and the River Elwy are within about 15 minutes of each other. Buses link St Asaph with Rhyl, Denbigh and Rhuddlan; a car makes the A55 and the wider Vale of Clwyd much easier.

- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off

Scams and watch-outs
- No rail station: the nearest is Rhyl, then bus or taxi.
- Bus 54 between Rhyl and St Asaph has had timetable changes; check the current Denbighshire timetable before you rely on it.
- Cathedral opening can be limited by services and events; check before travelling.
- Rural lanes around the Vale of Clwyd are narrow and often single-track.
Very low crime; the real risks are wet, unlit rural lanes, fast A55 traffic and slippery riverside paths after rain. Standard UK precautions apply.
