St. Albert

St. Albert is a small city on the Sturgeon River, about 20 minutes northwest of downtown Edmonton, and Alberta's oldest non-fortified settlement, founded as a Métis mission in 1861. Its sights are a compact downtown, a riverside park system and a Saturday market. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from Edmonton; a night here only makes sense if you want a quieter, cheaper bed outside the city.

St. Albert Transit (STAT) runs local routes and commuter buses to Edmonton; the main hubs are St. Albert Centre and Village Landing. Evenings and Sundays are limited to Dial-a-Bus, which must be booked about an hour ahead. Downtown, the river trails and Mission Hill are walkable; a car or taxi is easier for Big Lake and the highway hotels.
