Treat Kotte as the legislative capital, not a destination: stay in Colombo, a short taxi ride away, which has the hotels, restaurants and the full trip line.
Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is Sri Lanka's legislative capital, on the eastern edge of Colombo. Parliament sits on an artificial island in Diyawanna Oya lake, a design meant to echo the 15th-century Kotte kingdom that once ruled from this area. Beyond the parliament grounds and a few colonial and Kotte-era ruins, it is a residential and government suburb with almost no visitor infrastructure of its own.

Get around

- Traffic on the Kotte–Rajagiriya–Colombo roads is slow at rush hour (roughly 7–9am and 4:30–7pm).
- Low-lying areas around Diyawanna Oya can flood in heavy monsoon downpours.
