Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Both main sights are seasonal: the Anne Murray Centre runs mid-May to mid-October, the Miners' Museum June to September. Check dates before driving.
- Springhill Junction is a request stop 6 km from town: tell VIA Rail in advance and arrange a lift, there is no taxi rank.
- The mine tour is underground and cool; bring a layer and closed shoes.
- Fuel and food are limited in town; fill up in Amherst or Parrsboro.
A quiet small town; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 2 and 104, ice, and moose or deer at dusk. Crime is not a practical concern for visitors.
