Spotsylvania
Spotsylvania, Virginia
Base here only with a car: 1–2 nights for the Civil War battlefields and Lake Anna, or skip it and sleep in Fredericksburg.
Spotsylvania is the county seat of Spotsylvania County, Virginia, a spread-out, car-dependent area strung along I-95 and Route 1 just south of Fredericksburg. There is no walkable town centre to speak of: the draw is the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, Lake Anna, and easy highway access between Washington, DC and Richmond. Most travellers pass through on I-95 or use it as a cheap bed base for Fredericksburg.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- I-95 through this corridor is one of the most congested stretches in the US, especially Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings.
- Distances between sights are longer than they look on a map: plan 20–40 min drives between the battlefield, Lake Anna and the hotel strip.
- Summer heat and humidity are real; carry water if you walk the battlefield trails.
- Rural roads are dark and deer are common at dawn and dusk.
Generally safe; the practical risks are highway traffic on I-95, long unlit rural roads at night, and summer heat on battlefield trails. Standard US precautions apply.
