Spennymoor
Skip as a base: Spennymoor is a half-day stop, 20 min by bus from Durham. Sleep in Durham or Bishop Auckland and visit for the park and a match.
Spennymoor is a former coal town in County Durham, about 11 km (7 miles) from Durham city, with a population around 22,000. It has one large Victorian park, a leisure centre, a National League North football club and a working amateur theatre, but no hotel cluster and no rail station. Almost everyone who comes here does it as a short trip out of Durham, Bishop Auckland or Darlington, or comes for a match at the Brewery Field.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off

Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: you arrive by bus, car or taxi from Durham, Bishop Auckland or Darlington.
- Arriva 8 and 8A do not run on Sundays; check the timetable before a Sunday plan.
- Evening buses thin out early; book a taxi back if you are out late.
- Some pubs and takeaways are cash-friendly but card is normal; ask before ordering if unsure.
A quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are dark unlit streets after pub closing, thin evening buses and Sunday closures. Standard UK advice applies: 999 for emergencies, 101 for non-urgent police.
