Southwold is a small Suffolk seaside town of about 950 people, built around a working harbour, a brewery and a shingle beach. It is compact enough to walk end to end in 20 minutes, so the trip is about pacing: a slow day on the pier and greens, a second day along the coast. Public transport reaches it, but slowly, and most visitors arrive by car.

Walk: the town is small and flat, and everything in the centre is within 15 minutes on foot. Bicycle: Regional Cycle Route 31 runs north to Beccles and links to National Cycle Route 1. Bus: First 99 from Lowestoft and 99a from Halesworth and Bungay, Border Bus 146 from Norwich and 524 from Halesworth, all serving Beccles. Train: nearest stations are Darsham (9 miles), Halesworth and Beccles, each needing a bus or taxi for the last leg. Car: 6 miles east of the A12, about 35 miles from both Ipswich and Norwich.
