Southern Okinawa
沖縄南部
Base in Naha and day-trip south: 1 full day for the Peace Park and Himeyuri, a second only if you add Okinawa World or Seifa Utaki.
Southern Okinawa (Shimajiri) is the island's south end: Itoman, Tomigusuku, Nanjo, Haebaru, Yonabaru and Yaese. It is the Battle of Okinawa landscape — Peace Park, the Cornerstone of Peace, the Himeyuri and Prefectural peace museums — plus Cape Kyan, Seifa Utaki and Okinawa World. Most travellers sleep in Naha and come down by bus or rental car; two nights here only makes sense if you want a beach resort and a slow pace.

Get around
Buses run from Naha Bus Terminal to Itoman Bus Terminal, then change for the Peace Park (route 82) or the Himeyuri museum (107, 108). Okinawa World has its own stop (Gyokusendo-mae) on routes 51, 54, 81, 82 and 83. Buses are slow and infrequent: a rental car turns a two-bus day into a straightforward one, and is the only sane way to reach Cape Kyan or Seifa Utaki. Taxis are metered and easy to find at the airport and Itoman.
See and do
Known for
- Okinawa Peace Park and the Cornerstone of Peace
- Himeyuri Peace Museum
- Battle of Okinawa memorial sites
- Cape Kyan, the island's southern tip
- Seifa Utaki and Okinawa World
Day trips
| Where | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Naha | Yui Rail monorail or bus from Naha Bus Terminal | 20–40 min |
| Central Okinawa (Chatan, American Village) | Car or bus north along Route 58 | 40–60 min |
| Kerama Islands | Ferry from Tomari Port in Naha | 1–2 h including the port transfer |
| Ishigaki | Flight from Naha Airport | About 1 h in the air plus airport time |
Sleep
- Naha (city centre or Naha Airport area)
- The practical base: monorail, bus terminal, restaurants, and 30–60 min from every southern site.
- Itoman
- Closest to the Peace Park and the fishing port; a handful of hotels, quiet at night, bus-dependent.
- Tomigusuku / Bibi Beach
- Resort hotels on the coast 20 min from the airport; good with a rental car, thin on dining without one.
- Nanjo (Sashiki and the east coast)
- Near Seifa Utaki and Okinawa World; rural, car strongly recommended.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus services are sparse and stop early; check the last departure back to Naha before you set out.
- Many southern sights are outdoors with little shade: carry water and sun cover from May to October.
- Typhoons can close roads, beaches and museums between July and September; keep a day of slack in the plan.
- Some memorial sites ask for quiet and no photography in certain halls: follow the posted signs.
- Rental cars need an IDP (1949 Convention) plus your home licence; book the car before the trip in peak season.
Very safe for tourists; the real risks are heat, sun, sparse buses after dark and typhoons in late summer. Drive on the left if you rent a car.
