The South Valley is the southwestern half of the San Fernando Valley: Canoga Park, Encino, Reseda, Tarzana, West Hills, Winnetka and Woodland Hills. It is residential Los Angeles, not a sightseeing district. Its value is beds, parking and food along Ventura Blvd, plus quick canyon access to the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu. Without a car it is a poor base.

Metro's G Line (the former Orange Line) runs on its own busway from Chatsworth through Canoga Park and Warner Center to North Hollywood, where you transfer to the B Line (Red) subway for Universal City and Hollywood; it does not serve Van Nuys. Rideshares work but surge at commute hours. - Some motels along Reseda Blvd and Sepulveda are long-stay and not tourist-oriented: read recent reviews before booking.
- Canyon roads (Topanga, Malibu) are narrow, unlit and closed after heavy rain: check conditions before driving.
- Wildfire season roughly Aug–Nov: check air quality and evacuation notices if you are near the hills.
Residential and generally safe by big-city standards, but it is car country: the real risks are traffic, summer heat on trails and unlit canyon roads. Check the block before booking a cheap motel.
