South Padre Island is a 5 km resort strip on the southern tip of Padre Island, reached by causeway from Port Isabel and close to the Mexico border. One road, Padre Boulevard, runs its length. It is a beach-and-water town: turtle rescue, birding, kiteboarding, bay fishing, dolphin cruises. Spring break (March) fills it with students; winter brings long-stay visitors from the northern US and Canada.

The Wave is a free public bus along Padre Blvd and across the bridge to Port Isabel, running about 7:00–19:00. A car is the easiest way to reach the north-end sights and the mainland; taxis start around $5.
